Claiming a device or gateway
Most of the time, devices and gateways simply appear in your workspace once your provider sets them up for you. Sometimes, though, your provider ships you hardware and lets you bring it online yourself. That's claiming: you add a device or gateway you physically hold by typing in the two identifiers printed on its label.
Not seeing the buttons described here? Claiming is something your provider switches on per workspace. If you don't see a Claim button, your plan doesn't include self-claiming, and your provider sets your hardware up for you instead. Nothing here applies to you in that case.
What you need
Two identifiers, both printed on the device or gateway label (and usually on its box):
- The device ID (a 16-character code, sometimes labeled "DevEUI" or "EUI" by the manufacturer), or the gateway ID for a gateway.
- The serial number.
Both must match exactly. The serial number is case-sensitive, so IOX-12a and iox-12A are not the same. Type them straight off the label.
Permission required: Workspace Admin.
Claiming one device
- Open Fleet from the sidebar and select the Device list tab.
- Click Claim device.
- Enter the device ID and serial number. Optionally give the device a friendly name; leave it blank to keep the one it already has.
- Click Claim device.
If the two identifiers match a device your provider has made available, it joins your workspace and starts coming online within a minute or so. If they don't match, you'll see a single "no match" message, check both values against the label and try again.
Claiming several devices at once
If you've received a batch, you can claim them all in one go.
- On the Device list tab, click Claim multiple.
- Paste one device per line, as
device ID, serial number, name. The name is optional.- Example:
a8404101375fb3d1, IOX123456, Basement sensor
- Example:
- Click Claim devices.
- A results table shows the outcome for every line: Claimed, Already yours (you'd claimed it before), or Failed with a short reason.
Lines that aren't formatted correctly (a bad device ID, or a missing serial) are flagged before anything is sent, so you can fix them and retry just those.
Claiming a gateway
Gateways work the same way, from the Gateways tab.
- Open Fleet and select the Gateways tab.
- Click Claim gateway for one, or Claim multiple to paste a batch.
- Enter (or paste) the gateway ID and serial number, and claim.
When a claim doesn't work
For privacy, the platform gives the same short "no match" message for every claim that doesn't succeed, rather than telling you why. The usual causes are:
- A typo in the device/gateway ID or serial number, recheck both against the label.
- The serial number's capitalization doesn't match exactly.
- The item isn't available to claim, your provider hasn't offered this one up, or it's already been claimed.
If you've double-checked the label and it still won't claim, ask your provider to confirm the item is available to your workspace.
Frequently asked
I claimed a device but it's still showing offline. Claiming provisions it on the network in the background; give it a minute to send its first reading. If it stays offline, check the device is powered and in range, then see Finding your devices.
I claimed the same device twice. No harm done. The second attempt just reports Already yours, the device isn't claimed again or disturbed.
Can I un-claim something? No. Once an item is in your workspace, moving it back out is something only your provider does. Ask them if you claimed something by mistake.
